Creating your very own personal brand is one of the most important things that you need to do if you want to have any type of long term success in the online world.
Once you have created some type of foundation and have written a decent amount of content it’s highly imperative that you start developing your brand so your audience knows who you are and what you stand for.
There are many reasons why you should be branding yourself sooner than later and I’ll be going into more detail on this within the following post.
To be quite honest with you guys today, creating your own personal brand is something that is easier said than done.
In the 6 and a half years that I have been in the online world, I have had 3 other domains before I acquired Scottynewkirk.com
I had a pretty kick-ass brand called A Work At Home Business back in 2013- to 2016 until I made a few drastic mistakes that resulted in my business going under and having to start over again from scratch.
Within the following post, I’ll be sharing 7 steps that you need to follow to build one of the most kick-ass brands out there in the online world.
I’m sure that many of you guys out there have a plethora of questions & I’ll be doing my absolute best to answer them within the context of this post.
However, like always, if I fail to answer your questions please feel free to leave them for me within the comments below and I’ll get back to you ASAP with a detailed reply,

Reasons You Need To Brand Yourself

There are a plethora of reasons why you need to brand yourself if you want to have any longevity in the online world and earn a full time living that will grow over time.
Here are a few that I can think of off the top of my head below
Creates A Good First Impression

When people first come in contact with your brand you create a lasting impression and makes you look more professional & someone they would like to connect with.
You know what they say about first impressions, don’t you?
This can mean the difference between them coming back to your website on a frequent basis and actually listening to what you tell them to do or moving on to the next website for advice.
If you brand yourself this also gives them something to remember you by & can increase the likelihood of them coming back by up to 75% or more.
Makes A Name For Yourself

By creating your own personal brand you’ll be making a name for yourself and creating an identity that you would like to be known as online.
You want to try & keep your brand short and memorable so people can remember it easily when recommending it to a friend or family member.
This should be something thats short, sweet, & to the point.
This could be anything from a personal brand like Scottynewkirk.com to a keyword-rich brand name like thebestgamingheadsets.com.
Once you start to get a decent amount of exposure and people discover who you are, you’ll start to gain more recognition online.
Now that you have a few solid reasons why you need to establish your brand let’s dig into the 7 steps you’ll need to take to create your brand.
Sound good?

1) Go With Your Passion

passion
Since your entire business is based on a hobby or passion of yours,  you need to create your brand around the things that you are passionate about the most.
Depending on what niche you have decided to go with will determine what direction you should go in when creating a brand that you will be proud of later on down the road.
Outside of working on this website, I also have another one that I have been slowly building out in my spare time based on something that has always been near & dear to my heart.
Video Games!!
I created a brand around this hobby of mine and took some time coming up with a unique brand name that I felt described what my business was about.
What are you guys passionate about?
This will be the topic of your business and what you’ll be building your brand around so take a few minutes to think this over before making any final decisions.

2) Get Personal

personal
There are many types of brands that you can decide to go with but I personally find that personal branding happens to be the best and the ones I like to create the best.
In all my years as an online marketer, I have created many brands within the online world but none of them stand out or perform quite as well as a personal brand.
As you can see I’m using my name (Scottynewkirk.com) as my brand this time around and it doesn’t get more personal than this.
Wouldn’t you guys agree?
There are a plethora of other highly successful people who have gone down the personal route but this isn’t at all necessary in order for you to be successful.
With big-name companies out there like Amazon & Apple, it’s quite obvious that you don’t need to use your name when first starting out if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.
Personally, for me, it took me 6 years before I choose to go with my own name so I can definitely relate to those of you who aren’t comfortable going in this direction at this point in time.
The more personal you are when creating your content is the main thing that matters as this is how you’ll start to build a relationship with your readers.

3a ) Securing Your Online Entity

online entity
Once you have picked your passion and got personal, it’s now time for you to secure your online entity by purchasing your very own domain name.
Domain names are one of the most cost-effective marketing tools that you’ll be using on a day to day basis that you can acquire for less than $15 a year.
This is how you’ll get found online and the #1 way that you’ll be connecting with your audience and building a relationship with them.
Your domain name plays a huge role in your branding as well and will determine what type of brand you have chosen to go with.
I like to think of your own domain name as a piece of online real estate that will continue to go up in value the more you work on it (Just Like Traditional real Estate)
There are also many free ways for you to get started with a blog but these come with very few limited options.

3b) The Best Place To Acquire Your Domain Name

There are many places that you could acquire your domain name from but I personally like to get mine from Wealthy Affiliate.
When I used to get my domains from GoDaddy in the past I would always have to pay extra for features that should be included with my domain purchase.
This includes things like:

  • Privacy Protection
  • Email Accounts
  • Premium DNS records

This is something that you’ll pay extra for at Godaddy but is included in your domain purchase when you buy a domain name at Wealthy Affiliate.
Another thing I love about the domain names at Wealthy Affiliate is the fact that they won’t raise the price on you the following year when it’s renewal time.
You’ll pay a flat rate of $13.99 for .com TLD’s & $15.99 for a .net TLD.
That’s it, nothing more, nothing less.
I can remember many times when it would come time to renew my domain with Godaddy the price would sometimes double the next year.
Due to my experience with other domain registrars, I would have to say that Wealthy Affiliate is right up there in my top recommendations to purchase a domain name.

4) Creating Your Presence Online

traffic
Once you have completed the 3 steps prior to this one and have acquired your very own domain name, it’s now time to start creating a presence online & getting yourself noticed.
There are multiple ways for you to establish a presence online and here are the top 3 ways that I have had the most success with when I first got started in the online world.

  • Social Media
  • SEO
  • PPC

These are the top ways that I use to drive targeted traffic to my site and just a few of the many I would recommend to you guys.
Social media is probably one of the most powerful ways for you to create a presence online as there are a plethora of channels you can tap into to make this a reality for you.
Here are just a few of the many ones you need to be tapping into if you aren’t already.

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • You Tube
  • LinkedIn

This is something that you’ll need to eventually build out slowly over time.
Having a social media following is probably one of the most important aspects of building your brand and something that many people fail to utilize when they first get started.
Once you have built up a decent following using organic / free methods you might want to look into the more advanced ways to drive traffic to your brand using paid methods like PPC.

5) Don’t Be Afraid To Invest In Your Brand

investing
I’m sure that many of you have heard the saying it takes money to make money, right?
Even though most places let you get started for free to kick the tires you’re going to have to eventually pay if you wish to continue learning & advancing your affiliate marketing career.
Don’t be like me who decided to buy materialistic things once I started making money instead of putting it back into my business so I could make more.
There are multiple ways you could start investing in your brand but these are the top ways I would recommend as a newbie who is just getting started.

  • Training
  • Advanced training courses
  • Hiring a writer
  • PPC (paid advertising)
  • Designing a logo

As your business starts to grow you’re going to naturally want to start investing in it so that it will continue to grow and allow you to take things to the next level.
While I wouldn’t actually recommend PPC if you’re new to this as this can seem overwhelming and can get quite expensive quickly if you don’t know what you’re doing.
However, this can be one of the most effective ways to get targeted visitors on your site for a great price if you have some experience using PPC.
If not, you can wait until you have some experience in this field before attempting to take on PPC!!

6) Be Authentic & Creative

light bulb moment
One of the many skills you’ll need to possess if you want to have any long term success in this business is the ability for you to be authentic & creative.
With all the other people online who are creating their own style of content based on the same topic as yours, you’ll need to create your own style if you plan to compete against them & outrank them in the SERPS.
To be honest with you guys today, this is the only way that you’ll be recognized as an authority in your respective niche & have people looking up to you and asking you for advice.
It’s OK to see how other people have written their content so that you’ll know how to structure your site and what layout you should use.
However, you need to develop your own styling of writing and just start flowing if you want to create a solid brand that stands out in the online world.
This means absolutely NO copying other peoples ideas or taking credit for the hard work that they did.
Everyone has a particular way that they do things and by letting yours shine through you’ll start to gain a reputation online and people will look up to you.

7) Don’t Get Caught Up With The Design Aspect

design
This has got to be one of the biggest mistakes I made when I first initially created my first brand back in 2013.
After I started to get traffic to my website and was generating sales on an almost daily basis I thought I would try my hand at design by changing my theme to a much more complex them than I was using.
Instead of focusing on creating content like I should have been doing, I was more interested in making my site look pretty.
Remember at the beginning of this article I told you guys that I had a pretty awesome brand back in 2015- 2016?
Well, the main reason why I lost my business was due to a theme change that I should have researched a whole lot more than I did before I made this change.
While the design will play a role in the longevity of your brand in the long run, it’s not something you need to worry about in the first 5 years of being in business.
Your main focus should be on creating content and building a solid brand that you will be proud of for years to come.
Please don’t make the same mistake I did and worry about making your website pretty instead of focusing on what really matters which is creating quality content.

My Closing Thoughts

If you follow the 7 steps that I have laid out for you guys today and take action on them then you will be that much closer to creating a personal brand that you’ll be proud of for years to come.
It can take years to build a solid brand and get yourself established to the point where you are a well known brand that thousands of people have connected with.
However, before any of this can happen you need to have some type of training on how to build a business online before you even think of building a brand around this.
After years of struggling to learn affiliate marketing and everything I needed to do to become successful in this industry, I discovered, Wealthy Affiliate.
