Learning how to make money with a blog isn’t hard.
It’s quite the opposite.
When I started my first blog nearly eight years ago, it was pretty straightforward.
If you can turn on a computer and check email/ write messages, you can learn how to make money with a blog.
- Pick a topic and blog about it
- Write blog posts/ product reviews
- Learn how to generate traffic
- Join merchant affiliate programs
- Promote affiliate products to your audience
- Learn everything you can about affiliate marketing
- Earn affiliate commissions and learn other ways to make money
As you can see above, starting a blog is pretty simple if you know how to follow directions.
Furthermore, you’d also need to learn as much as you can about your chosen blog topic.
As you learn more and grow your knowledge, this will open additional opportunities to make money with your blog.
I’ve been making money with several of my blogs since early 2014.
Therefore, I’ve gained an infinite amount of knowledge about the money-making process.
Without this knowledge, I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have today in 2020.
I’ve had several people email in the past two weeks asking me how to make money with a blog.
After doing hours of research and digging deep, I’ve come up with more than enough information to write a detailed post.
Furthermore, I’ll also be adding my experience with blogging and showing you how to launch your first blog.
I’m sure many of you may have questions about starting your blog, and I hope to answer them for you today.
I’ll also be giving you a sneak peek into how much money I’m making from a few of my blogs.
Sound like fun?
Let’s get started, OK?
What Is A Blog?
A blog is a website filled with written information on a particular topic.
These blogs cover a wide array of ideas and topics.
Therefore they can cover just about anything.
Golf, bird watching, knitting, video games, parenting, among a plethora of other topics.are all things you could use to start a blog.
Whenever you Google something and the search results are displayed, those are blogs.
When you read a local news article about a house that burned down two streets over from you, this is also a blog.
Blogs come in all shapes, forms, and sizes.
It depends on the type of blog you want to start.
I’ll be covering this topic next, so don’t even think of going anywhere.
Different Types Of Blogs
As I said earlier, there are a wide variety of blogs you can start.
However, this depends on your intent and the type of blog you wish to build.
Here are a few of the many types of blogs
- Authority blog/ website
- Mini niche site
- Strickly review site
- News blog
Depending on the type of things you’re interested in will determine your direction.
Personally, when I started back in 2013, I focused on building authority sites.
I would much rather take my time and build-out an authority site on something I’m passionate about, rather than a mini niche site that focuses on one product.
Authority sites may take a while longer to build and get ranked.
However, it’s well worth it in the long run.
After you’ve built a solid foundation and are getting a steady flow of traffic, you could branch out and pursue other blog types.
If you want to!!
How To Get Started
Starting a blog is simple.
However, there are many pieces to the blogging puzzle that you’ll need to find if you truly want to succeed here.
Most places allow you to get started for free to test drive the platform.
Besides setting up your blog and building the framework, this requires a ton of time, hard work, as well as patience.
Not to mention, you’ll be learning a new skill that could potentially change your life for the better. (If you work hard and take this seriously)
Once you’ve done some brainstorming and have had a few minutes to think of a topic, you’ll need to take this idea and turn it into a website.
This online business training center is where I learned how to make money with a blog.
Therefore, I’ve been earning a living online from the comfort of my home since 2014.
As a result, I’ve learned everything I know today from the training center in the link above.
1) Pick A Topic
Now that you’ve chosen a topic, you’ll need to narrow this down to find your targeted audience.
To do this, you’ll need to take your topic of interest and break it down into categories.
If you choose video games, there are a plethora of
Here are a few off the top of my head.
- Gaming gear (Peripherals)
- Gaming headsets
- Strategy guides
- Virtual reality (V.R.)
- Plus so much more
There are millions of sub-topics within this massive niche alone.
Therefore you shouldn’t have any issues narrowing this down to find your targeted audience.
Is everything still making sense?
If not, let me know about it in the comments below.
2) Get Your Domain Name
Now that you’ve narrowed your topic down into specific categories, it’s time to start writing everything out.
However, before doing so, you’ll need to get a domain name first.
A domain name is nothing more than the web address of your blog.
Therefore, coming up with a short and catchy domain name is key to learning how to make money with a blog.
When I started Scottynewkirk.com, I wanted to build a site that would help people.
To accomplish this, I blog about the products and services that are near and dear to my heart.
In most cases, I try to document the experience I’ve had with these programs and pass it along to you guys.
Also, I’m the first to try out potential money-making opportunities for myself to see how they work and if they’re worth your time and energy.
If you decide to go with the make money niche (topic), I’d recommend checking into acquiring your name as a domain name as I have.
By doing so, you’ll get to personalize your brand and build an authority site.
There are millions of domain names available.
Which one will you choose?
I highly recommend a .com, if at all possible.
These tend to rank the best in Google and other search engines.
Furthermore, this TLD (Top Level Domain) is ideal for people who’re just getting started.
It’s a win-win for everyone!!
However, if a .com isn’t available, my next choice would be a .org.
Next down the line is a .net, but the last resort.
3) Choosing A Hosting Provider
Before your blog goes live on the world wide web, you’ll need to find a hosting provider.
Once you start creating content, uploading images, and designing your first blog post, you’ll need someplace to store these files and information.
Allow me to introduce the next piece to the blogging puzzle, hosting providers.
There are many excellent hosting providers at your disposal, but which one is the best?
Here are the ones I’ve dealt with and which one I’d recommend.
Based on the experience I’ve had with these multiple hosting providers, I’d recommend Siteground as the best one.
When choosing a hosting provider, you must select one with the following features.
- The most guaranteed uptime
- Fast loading times
- Image compression
- Phenomenal customer support
- Free site migration
- Free SSL
Without the features listed above, your blog won’t perform at the level you need it to be successful online.
Hosting is one of the most critical pieces of the blogging puzzle that will determine whether you succeed or fail.
Therefore, this isn’t something you’ll want to go down the cheap route.
Siteground has all the features listed above and is known for its outstanding 99.99% uptime.
Furthermore, they have plans that start at less than $5 a month.
Sounds pretty sweet if you ask me, wouldn’t you guys agree?
4) Create Content
Now that you’ve connected your blog to a hosting account, you’re ready to start creating content for the web.
Creating content is a skill that could take several years to master.
However, with lots of practice, reading, learning, and taking action, you’ll eventually get the hang of it and learn how to produce quality content.
Personally, for me, it has taken me several years to master this skill.
Seven years later, and I’m still learning about the many ways to create content.
Furthermore, I’m also discovering many ways to make money with a blog.
Depending on the chosen topic that you’ve decided to go with will determine the type of content you should create.
Here are a few of my favorite types of content listed below.
- Product Reviews
- How-to articles
- Motivational posts
- List type posts
- The list goes on and on
I find that product reviews are the easiest and most effective way to get lots of traffic and make sales online.
Furthermore, list posts are also a fantastic way to earn lots of revenue once you get one or more of them ranked in the SERPS.
What type of content will you create?
Let me know in the comments below.
5) Creating A Content Schedule
To gain Google’s trust, you’ll need to create some type of content creation schedule.
If you want your blog to be successful, it’s going to require a great deal of effort on your part.
Creating a blogging schedule means you’ll need to remain consistent and publish content regularly.
At the bare minimum, you should try to publish at least three times a week.
Creating and maintaining a consistent blogging schedule is vital if you want to make money with a blog.
I’d suggest sitting down on Sunday evening to plan your blogging schedule.
Also, I’d suggest purchasing a whiteboard calendar so you can write these ideas down as they come to mind.
You’ll also have the ability to decide which days you want to blog and make a note on that particular day.
If you’d instead blog every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mark these days on your whiteboard calendar.
However, if Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday work better for you, you can write this in as you’re making your weekly schedule.
Do what works best for you and adjust it as necessary.
6) Build A Brand
Building a brand is one of the most crucial pieces to the blogging puzzle that determines whether your blog is a success or just another statistic.
If you’re in this for the long haul and want a permanent solution to make money with a blog, you must build a brand sooner rather than later.
Creating a brand will allow you to build important trust with your blog visitors and other people that may discover your website.
For example, take a look at the top nationwide brands that we look up to and trust to provide us with everything we need.
- Sam’s Club
How many times have you purchased from any of the retailers listed above?
Is it because they’ve gained your trust and you’ve been shopping for years, or because they are a well known retailer that has stood the test of time?
Whatever your case may be, they have won you over in some way, and you’ve decided to follow their brand.
Building a brand allows people to identify you a whole lot easier.
Furthermore, they will remember you by your brand name or company logo.
When starting a blog, you must build a brand early on.
By doing so, you’ll build a reputation and start a fanbase of loyal blog readers.
So what brand are you going to create?
A personal brand (like ScottyNewkirk.com) or a more keyword-based brand?
7) Build An Audience
As you continue to create content, build out your brand, and stay on a blogging schedule, you’ll start to gain visitors to your blog.
As you continue to build your brand and write fun, engaging, and informative content, you’ll continue to grow an audience.
As you continue to engage with your audience, they’ll start leaving comments and stating their opinion on your various pieces of content.
Once you’ve obtained this piece of the blogging puzzle and connected the dots, you’re ready to start learning how to make money with a blog.
However, I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to build an audience before even thinking of making money.
One of the most effective ways to build an audience is by creating an email list.
Also, an email list of subscribers are one of the most exceptional tuned audiences online.
These people have personally subscribed to your list either cause they liked an article you wrote or advice you had given them.
There are a plethora of autoresponder tools available that make building an email list a piece of cake.
From utilizing free SEO methods to drive traffic to learn the more advanced traffic methods, there are many ways to build an audience of engaged people.
Make Money With A Blog
Once you have a loyal fanbase of blog readers, it’s time to learn how to monetize your audience and get paid for specific actions.
Whether you’ve chosen to monetize your traffic through affiliate promotions or to place ads on your site, there’s a monetization technique for everyone.
Here are a few that come to mind.
- Affiliate marketing
- Paid endorsements
- Renting out space
- E-commerce products
- Sponsored posts
Unfortunately, many people who attempt to learn how to make money with a blog never make it this far.
They’re looking for a shortcut to success, and they aren’t willing to stick with this long enough to see any long term results.
Instead, they keep searching for ways to become an overnight millionaire.
By doing so, they’re setting themselves up for failure from the start.
Therefore, you’ll NEVER come close to making your first $1 online.
However, for those who take this seriously, here is how it works.
Visitors come to your site via a Google search or some other method.
They’ll read your content, like what they read and want more info.
Once they click your link and make a purchase, you’ll earn an affiliate commission.
This process is known as affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is one of the many ways I utilize to make money with a blog.
There are a plethora of other ways that I’ve listed for you guys above.

As I said earlier, this is from one program.
I earn substantially more from several other programs that I actively promote on a few different sites I manage.
